What to Expect from Online Therapy
Getting Started and Using Telehealth
|
After we talk on the phone and schedule an assessment session, I will send you the intake paperwork and your personal session link for our on-line therapy sessions.
A few minutes before our scheduled session, you will click on the link for our teletherapy session. You will want to make sure that you are in a private location, with a good internet connection, where you feel comfortable talking freely. I recommend that any devices you're using are fully charged or that you have a power cable nearby. I will begin our session at our scheduled appointment time. |
About the
|
Our sessions are a safe place where you can share your thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment. The first session usually focuses on a clinical interview, where we discuss your goals and expectations for treatment, gather information about you and your needs, and address any questions as they arise. Sessions are typically 45-50 minutes, and although most people prefer to attend once a week, a modified schedule (more or less frequently) can be established to meet your needs.
It's my intention to provide services that will assist you and your family in reaching your goals. Treatment recommendations will be based on the information you provide and the specifics of your situation. I view clients as my partners in the therapeutic process. I will also regularly provide feedback regarding treatment progress and invite your participation in the discussion. Some issues are more complex than others and therefore may require more time in treatment. Due to the varied nature and severity of problems as well as the individuality of each client, it is not possible to predict the length of your therapy or to guarantee a specific outcome or result. If it is determined that you are not benefiting from treatment, either you or I may initiate a discussion of your treatment alternatives. Treatment alternatives may include, among other possibilities: referral to a specialized provider, changing your treatment plan, or terminating therapy services. |
Participation
|
Without full participation (consistent attendance at regularly scheduled sessions, application of therapeutic recommendations, and practice of the techniques outside of sessions), treatment goals are not likely to be met. Additionally, anytime a person participates in mental health treatment, it is possible for symptoms to temporarily intensify before they get better. Treatment requires change on many levels, and it is common for multiple family members to experience an adjustment period. It is expected that with consistent attendance and participation, symptoms will improve.

Phone, text, and email contact between sessions is accepted. However, I will attempt to keep those conversations brief due to the understanding that important issues are better addressed within regularly scheduled sessions. You may leave a message for me at any time on my confidential voicemail. Non-urgent phone calls are returned within 1-3 business days. In the event of a medical or mental health emergency, or any situation involving a threat to your safety or the safety of others, please call 911 and request emergency assistance. You should also be aware of the following resources that are available in the local community to assist individuals who are in crisis.
